Jim and Cindy Mahood

Innkeepers, Admiral Simsnewport

Jim and Cindy Mahood have been welcoming guests to Newport, Rhode Island since June 2000, when a visit to their daughter at the Naval War College sparked an unexpected idea: what if they combined their love of meeting new people with the joy of restoring and caring for a historic Victorian home?

That idea became a family calling. Over the years, aunts, uncles, cousins, daughters, and a niece have all taken a turn hosting travelers from around the world across four different Newport inns. Today the Mahoods have brought that experience home to one beloved property, where the extended family still greets guests with home-baked goodies made from treasured family recipes and a genuine passion for Newport’s history.

Jim’s path to innkeeping wasn’t a straight line — he grew up in Western Pennsylvania as the son of a coal miner, later serving in the Army National Guard and building his own small business before Newport, and the Navy connection that brought them here, changed everything. That background shows up in the way the Mahoods run their inn: disciplined, hands-on, and deeply committed to hospitality done right.

Guests notice. Admiral Simsnewport has earned consistent five-star praise on Google, TripAdvisor, and Yelp, and the Mahood family’s blend of Newport expertise, historic-home stewardship, and old-fashioned hospitality has turned the inn into a destination in its own right.

On this blog, Jim and Cindy share firsthand recommendations on Newport’s mansions, harbor, restaurants, and hidden local favorites — drawn from more than two decades of living, hosting, and exploring in the City by the Sea.
